The point is, Nick Pope's father was very much an insider when it came to aerospace research and development.
In our discussions, Nick Pope mentioned that he had talked to his father about UFOs. Among the topics was whether or not a crashed craft existed. The response
as told to me was quite impressive, and probably accurate. Geoffrey Pope said to his son, "If we had a UFO it would have been in my hangar. " He meant by that it would have been located in the extensive research facilities at Farnborough.
Clearly it wasn't.
UK MoD Decide to Release Their UFO Files
In 2008 the UK MoD made a conscious decision to make all of the previously classified UFO files available to the public. Prior to that time they employed the U.S. model of data release by responding only to FOIA requests about specific cases. They were well aware of the French experience in releasing documents over the Internet. In 2007 the French space agency, Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES), made an announcement that all files could be accessed by the public as of March 23 of that year. Over the years CNES had accumulated more than 100,000
pages of material based on reports of more than 1,600 sightings. The unanticipated response was overwhelming; so much so that the influx of people attempting to get at the data crashed the entire site within three hours.
The move to release files was more pragmatic than altruistic. There were four reasons provided for making the release in the manner they chose:
— Too many FOIA requests regarding UFOs
— The CNES files had been released by France
— A demonstration of open government and transparency
— Defuse accusations of a UFO cover-up
The United Kingdom, just like the United States, was inundated with FOIA requests asking for information about UFOs. In fact, it was the most requested topic. Like their U.S. counterparts, when enacted the founders of FOIA never saw that one coming. The administrative burden was more than confidentiality was worth. Of course, they needed to redact some files to protect personal privacy. 201
The MoD wisely decided to do a timed release rather than dumping all of their files at once. The first batch, made available on the Web site of the UK National Archives in May 2008, covered the reports from the years 1978 through 1987. A BBC article quoted a briefing prepared by MoD for the House of Lords for a debate about UFOs that sounds very much like what we would expect from the military establishment in the United States. The briefing said that "there is nothing to indicate that UFOlogy is anything but claptrap" and that the idea of an "inter-governmental conspiracy of silence" was "the most astonishing and the most flattering claim of all." The briefing goes on to say: "Let me assure this House that Her Majesty's government has never been approached by people from outer space."
Although it had been previously disclosed, among the reports released in February 2010 was a 1952 Churchill memorandum in which
